But it might not be enough. What are the Different Levels of Trauma Centers?Īs a Sacramento Personal Injury Lawyer, over the years I’ve been asked what the difference is between the different types of trauma centers. There are different levels of trauma centers: Level I, II, III, IV, and V. And several pockets in the Chicago metro area-including much of the South Side, as well as the Northwest Side’s Portage Park, west suburban Elmhurst, and around O’Hare-fall outside that radius and into a so-called trauma desert. In a study published in the American Journal of Public Health in 2013, researchers at Northwestern University found that gunshot victims who were more than five miles from a trauma center were 23 percent likelier to die. On any given day, it takes 17 to 19 minutes for an ambulance to take patients from Hyde Park, for example, to a Level I trauma center, according to a 2011 WBEZ report.ĭelays, of course, can be deadly. In fact, in Boston, there’s a trauma center for every 10 square miles in Chicago, there’s currently one for every 57 square miles. Medical experts say the death toll stayed as low as it did because that city had five adult Level I trauma centers within two and a half miles of the attack-and some patients were admitted as soon as 12 minutes after the explosion, according to the American College of Surgeons. To get a sense of how much boosting a city’s surge capacity matters, consider the bombings at the 2013 Boston Marathon, which killed three and injured 264. Two years ago, ACEP gave Illinois as a whole an F for disaster preparedness, ranking it the sixth-worst in the nation, in part because surge capacity across the state plummeted from 576 beds per million people in 2009 to only 290 beds per million in 2014. Yes, Lurie Children’s Hospital has since built a Level I trauma center in Streeterville, but it’s strictly for kids (as is the one in Comer Children’s Hospital). There’s no reason to think the situation has gotten better. (Only Washington, D.C., rated worse.) The four Chicago trauma centers the committee examined were, on average, operating at 134 percent capacity on a typical Tuesday afternoon, and three of those centers “had no available treatment space in the emergency room to accommodate new patients,” the report said. Chicago ranked second-worst in the ability to handle a situation similar to the 2004 bombing in Madrid, which injured 2,000 people. ![]() House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform looked at the trauma capacity of seven cities considered to be the biggest potential targets for terrorist attacks: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Washington, D.C., and (because they were sites for presidential conventions that year) Minneapolis and Denver. Because of the size of the crystal, the extra area of tissue these will covere when applied to the body, will amplify the vibrational effect of the tuning fork itself. Our own Crystal Attenuators, designed to fit most tuning forks, (and all tuning forks we sell,) have a crystal gemstone attached to a stainless steel foot, which also has a "Flower of Life" lasered into the head of that foot. In general, non-weighted forks are best used for their acoustical effect (listening.) The weighted forks (extra weight visible on the end) carry vibration deeper into tissue, so are excellent for direct therapeutic use in relation to our physiology, work with the chakras, etc. We are now adding Sunreed's Exclusive Weighted Tuning Forks, designed to provide the historically and scientifically known effectiveness that musical harmonies and binaural stimulation may provide, as well as a new methodology of 'binaural harmonics.' See our link to these sets below, for more information on these. There is a growing body of research on their effectiveness in application to mood disorders, states of relaxation, chronic joint discomfort, pain relief, even the latest science on their effect on nitric oxide release in our cellular cycles. Keep reading to find out whether a tuning fork can make your teeth explode.Zacciah briefly discusses Tuning Forks: Tuning forks are one of the fastest growing areas of therapeutic sound methods. Due to cost considerations, however, most modern tuning forks are made out of stainless steel. Really soft metals like tin, gold and lead, meanwhile, won't make any noise at all. Soft metals like brass have a low, dull pitch. ![]() Dense metals like copper and steel vibrate with a crisp, high pitch. You can also adjust the pitch of a tuning fork by making it out of different materials. If someone ever finds a hammer big enough to hit it, the sound would most likely be too low to be heard by human ears. The largest tuning fork in the world, by the way, is a 45-foot (13.7-meter) sculpture in Berkeley, Calif. A loose string, on the other hand, takes longer to shudder back and forth, resulting in a lower tone. ![]() Without much room to wobble, a tight string vibrates quickly. It's the same principle as strings on a guitar. The smaller a tine, the less distance it has to move, and the faster it will be able to vibrate. To mimic the lowest key, on the other hand, it would only need to vibrate at 28 Hz.īut how do you adjust the speed at which a tuning fork vibrates? Well, first, you could adjust the length of your tuning fork. For instance, for a tuning fork to mimic the top key on a piano, it needs to vibrate at 4,000 Hz. The faster a tuning fork's frequency, the higher the pitch of the note it plays. The result is a steady collection of rarefactions and compressions that, together, form a sound wave. When the tines snap back toward each other, they suck surrounding air molecules apart, forming small, low-pressure areas known as rarefactions. When a tuning fork's tines are moving away from one another, it pushes surrounding air molecules together, forming small, high-pressure areas known as compressions. ![]() The way a tuning fork's vibrations interact with the surrounding air is what causes sound to form. ![]() ![]() Just like in NetBeans, in IntelliJ IDEA you can use global libraries, which are available for all projects, and project libraries. GPX files should be compatible between products but there are many type of data that can be in a GPX file and sometimes there is confusion about tracks vs routes vs waypoints. MapSource will work with the 5212 - at least they say it does and I think there are others I know doing it. ![]() What you need isGarmin's MapSource product: You don't need GPSBabel or anything else. More from Jeff on a similar Garmin plotter ![]() The user manual on OpenCPN mentions transferring files through a direct connection with a plotter, but I have not found anything yet that mentions remotely transferring files. I have saved routes and waypoints from OpenCPN before and sent them to others and have had it work, but I do not have any experience actually transferring files to a GPS/plotter unit. My question is, and I suppose it is for the OpenCPN users, can you save your GPX file from OpenCPN to an SD card if the computer is equipped with an SD slot? And, more importantly, will the GPX format be compatible with the Garmin plotter on his boat? ![]() You can, in fact, use the SD card to transfer files from a computer to the plotter and the process is outlined in the user manual. His question is this: Can he save his tracks/waypoints on the computer to an SD card, and then insert it into his plotter and have them show up? I did some research and found the manual online for his plotter. His GPS/Plotter on the boat is a Garmin 541-S and comes with an SD card. It has been a huge help being able to view every chart for the area on his computer, so today he asked me if there was a way to save routes from his computer to the GPS/Plotter on the boat instead of transposing individual waypoints and entering them by hand when he got to the marina. I set him up with OpenCPN on his computer so he can create and plan routes and study the area on a nice large screen. My grandfather recently purchased a 21' Key West down in Florida is becoming familiar with the Pine Island Sound area. ![]() |
